Ad Muncher & Vista (Ultimate)

Postby akita » Wed Mar 28, 2007 3:02 am

With UAC at default settings, disable IE's 'Protected Mode' in IE Tools, and Ad Muncher will run just fine with IE7 in Vista.

HOWEVER, like other users, I would PREFER to see an Ad Muncher update that allows it to work with UAC fully enbaled AND IE's Protected MODE enabled as well.

I'm sure there's hope - just that little matter of when ... ;-)

I too would like to see this. I dont like having to sacrifice security measures to run a program :-/

My Work-Around

Postby akita » Wed Mar 28, 2007 7:32 am

Actually, I just found a work-around:

1 - Make sure Ad Muncher is enabled & running
2 - Open Vista's IE7 with Protected Mode off and visit a site (i.e. google or whatever)
3 - Change IE's Security option to enable Protected Mode (Tools | Internet Options | Security)
4 - IE7 will want to open a new window to reload the page in Protected Mode - let it go ahead and close the first window

And that's it - seems to work A-OK for me.

Even if I close IE7 now, and later reopen it, Ad Muncher will still work with IE7 in Protected Mode and with UAC at default settings.

One other thing, though: Don't forget to reset the Protected Mode to off before restart or shut down, otherwise you need to reset IE7 to Protected Mode off next time you fire up Vista and want to go online, and then go through the above 1-4 steps ...

One more thing I noticed: The very first time you switch from Unprotected to Protected Mode, you need to re-enter all your passwords for any password protected sites you are visiting (i.e. this great forum, hotmail et al). Though luckily this you only have to do ONCE!

Sure it's a bit of a hassle, but should do until Ad Muncher will have an update to run without this work-around ...

Hopefully soooo soon ...??? Please ??? ;-)

Good workaround akita, that is what I did from day 1 of using Vista and Ad Muncher works 100 percent.

It's only temporary.

Until the release of v4.72

What about it?

Vista support isn't until v4.72

v4.71 is a bug fix release.

Not at all.

v4.71 and v4.72 are both minor releases and it shouldn't be long before a beta is out for v4.71.

v4.72 won't be far behind.

OK thanks, I was worried because I know how long it took before 4.7 final was released.

I turned finally UAC on after not using it for 8 months. It seems to work pretty fine nowdays, and I could configure admuncher separately to run always elevated, so it *should* work even with uac without any extra tricks.

Edit: of course we still don't have 4.72 ... :-)

Ihmemies, UAC causes IE to use 100% cpu when admuncher is running (at least in my experience on more than a handful of different PCs btw), and that is when it is running with admin rights... So yeah still need the 4.72 release before it's working 100% correctly...

Oh and when 4.72 is released you should not have to elevate anything, that includes the installer. When you run the installer UAC will kick in and ask to elevate automatically. At least that is how its suppose to work according to Microsoft docs.

That or fix the problem and not have to elevate at all. That is the real fix. ;)

Update: What do you know...

28088/E - Added Vista manifest to installer exe to require admin rights.
Well, that's the workaround, but at least it works. Though I would love to see the installer work correctly without admin rights...

The installer will always need admin rights in order to overwrite files in the "program files" folder, which of course normal users can't do and is required in order to update the executable files.

Ad Muncher itself will be able to run without elevation in v4.72 though.

v4.71 will be released in the next few hours so work on v4.72 will start this afternoon, and the first v4.72 beta shouldn't be more than a fortnight away.

Um, then why install to the program files directory? And not their user directory? Of course you will not be able to upgrade older builds but seeing as no other builds before 4.72 are even supported on Windows Vista then why worry about that? Of course only on vista that is.

On XP you simply continue to install to program files. Its easy enough to detect what version of windows admuncher is being installed on.

Just a thought. Then no mess with UAC at all. :D They way it's meant to be done. he-he

Unless I dont understand how this works and admuncher must be installed to the program files directory for some reason?
